sneakers ethical consumption respect

Guilt-free fashion? We’re in. Back before sustainability became a watchword, L’Exception was at the axis of the French fashion movement – supporting grassroots brands that promote planet-friendly and ethical manufacturing. At a time where many large footwear companies are moving mass production to Asia, there is still a small fraction of committed artisans that have vowed to keep things local. Innovating to ensure the smallest possible footprint, natural materials are making their comeback as footwear celebrates the old adage, ‘less is more’.

Celebrating a new style of shopping pioneered by a slow fashion philosophy, this growing community of brands is working smarter and harder to ensure production methods respect the highest ethical and ecological benchmarks. A backlash against the mass production that resulted in an array of headline-grabbing events across Asia, ‘conscious consumerism’ has made it into the mainstream – with a call for clearer labelling when it comes to the provenance of our products.

A strong example of sweatshop manufacturing, the trainer is at the centre of the debate. The essence of modern style, the humble sports shoe has made its way into every facet of modern living and stands as a semaphore for 21st-century style. Since 2016, even the most esteemed fashion houses have been offering their interpretation on the trainer, available in a plethora of shapes, styles, materials and models.

Working to create a wardrobe staple that ticks all the boxes when it comes to environmental and ethical impact, sustainable footwear brands are creating a network of designers, producers and artisans that excel industry standards – ensuring fair pay & safe working conditions for all of its employees and avoiding high pollutant products like plastics in the composition of its products.

With more and more brands switching to sustainability, the trainer is a statement item that speaks for the eco-responsible movement. Showcasing a wide range of ethical footwear brands at L’Exception, we’re highlighting three particular French favorites that are celebrated for their positive social and ecological impact.

PIOLA

Falling in love with the charm and luxury allure of Peru, Antoine the founder of Piola, started his journey into the world of community fashion as a volunteer, anchoring his brand concept in the principles of local farming and micro-financing as laid out by the United Nations and WWF. Rich in natural resources, most notably alpaca, cotton and rubber, Piola pays 6 times the average to its community of farmers, ensuring the longevity and viability of the raw material and those that harvest it. To further support their collective of rubber producers and develop their working environment, Piola has successfully set up a platform that allows customers to donate 4 euros from each pair of shoes bought. More than just a goodwill gesture, the minimalist design and French savoir-faire anchors the aesthetic in modern street style – offering a selection of trainers, boots and derbies with their signature Amazonian rubber sole.

PANAFRICA

Founded in 2015, Panafrica is a brand rooted in the heritage and tradition of African waxed fabric. Working this iconic and endlessly colourful concept into a selection of trainers, the founders have a close commitment to their unique products, taking into account the social, economic and environmental impact of each pair. Allowing customers to trace their purchase back to the raw materials and final assembly of the sneaker, every collection is sourced from fabrics along the Ivory Coast and constructed in Morocco, near Casablanca, in a workshop which respects workers’ rights.

A carnival of colours that captures the spirit of African design, each pair is designed with the human element in mind, supporting the social and environmental goals that allow people to thrive. Panafrica supports projects for access to education and job training in Africa. For each pair of sneakers you buy, Panafrica donates 10% of its profit to various associations. Working on the ground with suppliers and factories in Burkina Faso and along the Ivory Coast, the brand purchases naturally dyed fabrics at a premium, taking into account weavers’ skills by working together on the design of brand-new products or colours. Thanks to their continued commitment, their trainers pay tribute to the cultural contrasts and rich tapestry of the African continent.
