On its fifth anniversary, Weyes Blood's (Natalie Mering) warm and elegiac Cardamom Times is being reissued for the first time on vinyl since its first out-of-print pressing in 2015. It features a new cover with an image of a ruined paradise at sunset - Jamaica Bay in Queens, New York, surrounded by rust. A couple lies on the ground, caught in a timeless well-being. Since the EP's release, Weyes Blood's Front Row Seat to Earth (Mexican Summer, 2016) and Titanic Rising (Sub Pop, 2019) have both been named Best New Albums by Pitchfork, the latter of which has made numerous prestigious Best Albums of 2019 lists. Unlike these more elaborate albums, Cardamom Times was recorded on tape in Natalie's home studio in Rockaway Beach, New York. The songs on Cardamom Times demonstrate Weyes Blood's reverence for sacred music and the avant-garde, channeling Sybille Baer's hymns through the filter of Baltimore's experimental scene, Terry Riley's minimal and melodic drone accompanied by the voices of Sacred Heart, Anaïs Nin's conflicting words, and St. Augustine's warm embrace. With Cardamom Times, Weyes Blood invites listeners into this space of love and longing, struggle and change, surrounded by the decrepitude of time that perpetually invades us.
