This is the period when the sales kick off, and endless queues of shoppers form in front of major retailers to buy products at knock-down prices. The sales period is highly regulated, and the dates of winter and summer sales are very precise, despite a few exceptions. In most French departments and overseas territories, winter sales begin on the second Wednesday of January at 8am, or on the first Wednesday of the month if the second is after January 12. Summer sales start at 8am on the last Wednesday of the month, or on the penultimate Wednesday if the last Wednesday falls after June 28. Each sale period is regulated for a duration originally of six weeks, reduced to four. The 2024 winter sales ran from Wednesday, January 10, 2024 to February 6, 2024. The 2024 summer sales ran from Wednesday June 26, 2024 to Tuesday July 23, 2024. The next sales period, the 2024 winter sales, will start on January 8 at 8 a.m. and last for four weeks until February 4, which marks the end of the winter sales. However, certain exemptions have been made. In Meurthe et Moselle, Meuse, Moselle and Vosges, in order to meet competition from Luxembourg, a derogation has been granted to bring forward the sale date from January 2 to January 29. Overseas sales are also postponed, as the seasons are different. The 2025 winter sales will take place in Saint Pierre et Miquelon from January 22 to February 18, while the 2024 summer sales run from July 17 to August 13. In Saint Martin and Saint Barthélémy, the 2024 winter sales will begin on May 3, 2025 and end on May 30, 2025. Some brands also offer pre-sale private sales to their most loyal customers, as we do.
