We had a chance to chat with Clément Maulavé, president of Hopaal.

Hopaal is a super-active outdoor brand with a strong commitment to the environment. Their watchword? Minimalism. The aim is to produce only what is necessary, with the best materials and as locally as possible. A collective adventure, the brand accompanies its community in its active daily life: at the restaurant, in town, in the mountains... Hopaal is an independent company owned by a community of over 1,000 people. How would you describe the start of this crazy adventure?


By opening up its capital to its community, HOPAAL has become a collective adventure: something that sets us apart from many brands owned by private structures or investment funds. This new organization strengthens our independence and enables us to make strong decisions from a design, social or environmental point of view - which is great! Sharing the adventure with more than 1,000 co-owners is both very exciting and demands greater demands and transparency, because we want to share our progress, thoughts and results with our community. So for a start, it's great, because in addition to the HOPAAL team, we're bringing together a thousand very involved people followed by thousands of people from the HOPAAL community.

Your brand identity is well defined on your website, can you give us more details about the identity and inspiration for your brand?


HOPAAL is a superactive outdoor brand committed to minimalism, the aim is to lighten our community in their active daily lives. By offering them a reduced wardrobe of highly functional premium pieces. With over 6 years' experience in recycled materials and local manufacturing, we've learned that minimalism is the ultimate commitment to the environment. So we want to make our (ultra) dynamic lifestyles compatible with a strong environmental commitment.

Can you tell us more about your product design and manufacturing processes, as well as your workshop in the Basque Country?


The design of our products always starts from a need in our community. For example, for our multi-activity pants we respond to the need of how to change environment without changing clothes? These pants can be worn in restaurants, on hikes, in the mountains and so on. The aim is to produce only what's really necessary. For manufacturing: we develop or search for European fabrics, with strong environmental commitments (revalorized - recycled) and we transform them into garments either in our Pays-basque workshop (facing the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz), or in Porto, less than 1000km from Biarritz. Our workshop is very recent and embodies that it is possible to manufacture very locally.

Can you explain how Hopaal participates in "slow fashion"?


There's nothing more slow than manufacturing little.
This summer we went from 200 references to just 4: not many brands will accept this challenge :))
Beyond the offer: we remain very committed to sustainable materials, local manufacturing and encouraging people to consume what is just necessary.

In your manifesto you say you want to do the right thing to raise the standard and respect future generations. How do you imagine Hopaal's future?


HOPAAL should symbolize permanent movement and the refusal of the superfluous. We want to accompany our community in all their practices - from everyday to sports - with one promise: to lighten their lifestyle.
