THE BOTTER BACKSTORY

Rushemy Botter and Lisi Herrebrugh are the namesake pairing behind Holland’s latest breakthrough brand, Botter. The Dutch design duo made their name at some of the finest fashion schools in the world. After one year of military service, Rushemy studied fashion design at Antwerp’s esteemed Royal Academy of Fine Arts – whilst Lisi studied at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute – joining her partner in Belgium.

It was there that the pair, originating from the Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao, decided to create a collection that broke through the stereotypes of island dressing – creating a selection of original and exciting silhouettes that reflected the brand’s strong sustainable focus.

BOTTER AT HYERES

After winning the LMVH award at the 33rd edition of Hyeres festival in 2018, Botter won over industry leaders like Haider Ackermann, Tilda Swinton, Lou Doillon and Delfina Delettrez Fendi with their showcase ‘Fish or Fight’ a statement collection of versatile deconstructed tailoring.

Paying tribute to their home island in the Caribbean, the duo promoted their eco-responsible philosophy via clothing crafted from recycled plastics that pollute the island nation they hold dear. A forward-thinking concept with a strong sense of androgyny, their pieces were aimed at both male and female customers – reflecting a more inclusive approach to traditional ready to wear.

An eye-catching collection with a poignant narrative, the Dutch Caribbean couple used their platform at Hyeres to protest against industrial fishing methods that affect local fishermen and the island economy – gaining them first place at the festival.

THE DUO’S SUSTAINABLE COMMITMENT

Recently, the fashion world has become increasingly occupied with eco-responsibility, encouraging brands to become more innovative and conscious when it comes to sustainable design. A cause Lisi Herreburgh and Rushemy Botter have long been engaged in – helping to preserve oceans and protect coral habitats from the negative effects of human activity, nicknamed ‘The Great Pacific Garbage Patch’ – a mass of plastic x6 bigger than France. Aiming to raise awareness and help reduce ocean plastic, the Dutch duo’s ‘Fish or Fight’ campaign was crafted from recycled fishing materials, plastic bags and other plastics found on neighbouring beaches and streets. Whilst strong advocates against plastic pollution, this collection celebrates the endless summer allure of the Botter design DNA – and the joyful exuberance of the Petit Bateau legacy.
